Santa Barbara High’s Jack Baker and Carpinteria High’s Maddie Brooks were named Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week  at Monday’s press luncheon.

Baker was a key component of the Dons’ two victories last week that brought Santa Barbara High its first Channel League basketball championship since 2006. The junior forward scored 25 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in Tuesday’s win over San Marcos followed by a double-double in Thursday’s win over Dos Pueblos.

“I’m really happy he’s a junior because he is a monster,” said Dons assistant coach Andy Gil. “Sometimes he does things in practice and it’s amazing.”

Brooks scored seven goals in each of the Warriors’ two Tri-Valley League victories last week that resulted in a league championship, just the second in school history. Brooks and teammate Hope Grant scored 170 of the Warriors’ 236 goals this season.

Honorable mentions included Nathan Dutcher, Providence Hall Basketball; Emilio Gonzalez, Santa Barbara High Basketball; Andrew Dossa, UCSB Swimming; Sweets Underwood, UCSB Basketball; Jenna Phreaner, San Marcos Water Polo; Gabby Koepenick, Bishop Diego Soccer; Kelsie Sampson, Westmont Basketball.

The Athletes of the Week are selected each week by a panel of local sports media reporters. The candidates are identified by PresidioSports.com, Santa Barbara’s Community Sports News resource.
