Ellen Upton was honored as the Scholar Athlete of the Year from Santa Barbara High at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon.
Upton, who runs on the Dons cross country team and also plays water polo and swims for the school, carries a 4.7 GPA, with a course load of advanced placement classes. He academic plan in the future includes forensic chemistry, forensic anthropology and criminology.
Upton said her grandmother, Barbara, is her inspiration as a student athlete.
Besides her busy class schedule, Upton is editor of the school yearbook, president of the Human Rights Club and a volunteer with several nonprofit groups.
On her involvement in athletics, she says: “I’m not exactly known for my first places or amazing records. I participate in athletes to put in my best effort and be part of a team, especially cross country, a seeming individual sport. I think it’s incredible to see the team as a whole work together and experience everyone’s best efforts pay off.”
