Maddie Cleek has been named Carpinteria High’s recipient of the Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award.

Cleek is a member of the Warriors tennis and basketball teams. She was the co-captain of the basketball team as junior. Her other school activities include theater, mock trial and JSA, a junior statesmen program.

“She has exceptional leadership skills in the classroom and on the basketball court,” said basketball coach Dan Mercer. “She has the respect of her teammates from all walks off life.”

Another quality Mercer appreciates about Cleek is her ability to think fast.

“She thinks faster than I do on the court. It’s kind of nice in practice and in games to have a person who thinks as quickly as she does. She’s like a coach on the court,”
he said.

Cleek played a key role in Carpinteria winning the Frontier League championship this season.

“Her ability to rally players together was really an inspirational part of our season,” Mercer said.

He added: “In the spirit of the Phil Womble Award, Maddie is extremely responsible, dedicated, loyal and has great perseverance.”

Maddie is the daughter of Stu and Cathy Cleek.
