A lot of introductions are made every week at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon, and nobody gets a louder round of applause than Phil Womble. This week's Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week are Dos Pueblos golfer Vanesa Villa and Dos Pueblos water polo goalie Philip Bates. Both athletes led their respective teams to a pair of big Channel League victories last week. Bates, a senior team captain, recorded eight saves in Thursday's pivotal Channel League matchup with Santa Barbara High. Carpinteria High School's Erin Saito was recognized as the first Phil Womble Ethics in Sports award winner of the year on Monday. Saito plays basketball, softball and tennis while remaining active in various student programs. Male Athlete of the Week is Santa Barbara High's Cheroke Cunningham. Cunningham, a sophomore, rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns in the Dons' victory over Nordhoff last week. Cunningham, whose father - former Don great A.C. Cunningham - was present at Harry's, has scored eight touchdowns in Santa Barbara's first five games. Another award was handed out Monday, as Debra Koopmans was named Sportsperson of the Month. The award was presented by American Riviera Bank's Laurie Leighty and is sponsored by Wade and Roxanne Nomura. Athletes of the Week: Cross country runners from Dos Pueblos took both awards. Bryan Fernandez was the male winner and Addi Zerrenner won the female honor. Athletes of the Week: Thayer White, San Marcos: White shot back-to-back rounds of 1-under par 70 to win the Channel League Individual Golf Championship last week. White turned in the best round for the Royals in 8 of their 11 matches this season.
