SPORTSPERSON OF THE MONTH: Paul Klein Paul Klein was eager to teach his young son, Taylor, about sports a few years back, so he started a group for young kids to learn about and gain exposure to different sports. ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Amanda Moreno, UCSB Cross Country — Moreno ran a record-shattering 19:57.0 over the 6K Ag/Ops Course in Riverside on Saturday to lead the Gaucho women’s cross country team to its second consecutive Big West championship. JEANNETTE MENDOZA - SAN MARCOS GIRLS BASKETBALL Mendoza scored 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 58-56 win over Camarillo. The school record is 32 points, set back in 1995. ROBERTO NELSON - SANTA BARBARA BASKETBALL Nelson, a senior headed to Oregon State next year, scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Dons over San Marcos in front of a big crowd at the SBCC Sports Pavilion.
