About the Award
Each month during the school year, Special Olympics of Santa Barbara County and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table honor a Special Olympics Athlete of the Month. This award is granted to a person who exhibits the values expressed by the mission of Special Olympics.
Special Olympics is an international organization dedicated to providing year round athletic training and competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics of Santa Barbara County has provided programs locally since 1969. They offer sports training and competition in ten sports, held in two seasons, spring and fall. Special Olympics also hosts the only inter-school competition for children in special education classes, ages 6-18. This event, The School Games Track and Field Competition, is held each spring at Santa Barbara City College Track.
Special Olympics Mission Statement: Special Olympics Santa Barbara empowers children, teens, and adults with intellectual disabilities to become respected, productive members of our community through sports training and competition in ten sports offered throughout the year.
