Female Athlete of the Week Kailyn Kugler has been on fire for the UCSB women's soccer team, which has one three consecutive Big West games. In those games, the junior has scored four goals, including two game-winners. On Sunday, she scored both goals — including a game-winning penalty kick with less than a minute to go in double-overtime — as the Gauchos defeated UC Riverside 2-1 at Harder Stadium. Male Athlete of the Week Danny Barrera came up big on a big stage, scoring the first goal in the No. 11 UCSB men's soccer team's 3-0 win over ninth-ranked Indiana at Harder Stadium on Friday Night. Attendance at the match was 10,214 — a school record for a regular season match. Barrera also had an assist in the game. Female Athlete of the Week Rebecca Saraceno led the UCSB women's volleyball team to a perfect 3-0 record last week, including a five-set, come-from-behind triumph over No. 21 UC Irvine on Saturday night. Saraceno recorded a career-high 29 kills in that match and had double-doubles in the two previous matches. Brendan Kerwin-McElroy and Maria Mayer, this week's Round Table Athletes of the Week, enjoyed undefeated weeks with each of their teams. Mayer, a San Marcos graduate, led Santa Barbara City College to three wins last week, making it seven in a row overall. These two very deserving student-athletes, Emily Rottman on the left and David Walker on the right, have led their teams to great starts in the fall sports season. Rottman, a senior on the Santa Barbara High volleyball team, pounded out 45 kills over two matches, both of which were wins. Her 24-dig, 19-kill performance against Division I-AA champion Santa Margarita helped the Dons make an early statement as they try to defend their Division I-A title this year. ROBERT VICKERS, DOS PUEBLOS BASEBALL Vickers tallied off-the-chart statistics at the San Luis Obispo Tournament last week. The senior shortstop crushed two grand slams, scored eight runs and hit for a .625 average in four Charger victories.
