  Athletes of the Week: Bishop football player Brandon Gonzalez was the male award winner for his performance against Santa Clara. He rushed for 161 yards on 16 carries and scored three touchdowns in a 35-0 win that improved the Cardinals to 6-1 and 2-0 in the Frontier League. Dos Pueblos volleyball player Amanda Moriarty was the female winner after her dominating performance in a four-set win at Santa Barbara that clinched a share of the Channel League title. The Santa Barbara tennis doubles team of Madison Hale and Megan Grant were honored as female Athletes of the Week. They won all three sets in the Dons’ upset victory over previously undefeated Peninsula, the No. 3 team in CIF Division 1 and handed Peninsula’s top doubles team its first loss of the season. Athletes of the Week: Dos Pueblos’ Philip Bates and Vanesa Villa

This week's Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week are Dos Pueblos golfer Vanesa Villa and Dos Pueblos water polo goalie Philip Bates. Both athletes led their respective teams to a pair of big Channel League victories last week. Bates, a senior team captain, recorded eight saves in Thursday's pivotal Channel League matchup with Santa Barbara High. Male Athlete of the Week is Santa Barbara High's Cheroke Cunningham. Cunningham, a sophomore, rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns in the Dons' victory over Nordhoff last week. Cunningham, whose father - former Don great A.C. Cunningham - was present at Harry's, has scored eight touchdowns in Santa Barbara's first five games. Athletes of the Week: SBCC’s Jessica Domenichelli won the female award for scoring a goal and adding two assists in the first half in a 3-0 win over L.A. Pierce in a battle of unbeaten nationally ranked teams. The male winner was Andrew Thayer of San Marcos for his performance in the Royals’ first football win. Athletes of the Week: Sam Kwock of Bishop Diego football and Isabella Doub of Santa Barbara High golf are the honorees. Kwock had 189 all-purpose yards in a 33-14 win over Mission Prep. He returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown, recovered a pooch kickoff that set up a touchdown and had two rushes for 45 yards. In two match wins over Pacifica, Doub fired a 1-under par 34, with birdies on two par-5s, at River Ridge Golf Course and shot a 40 to lead her team at Montecito CC. … [Read more...]

Athletes of the Week: Shannon Slaught of Bishop Diego is the female winner. She was a runner-up in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke at the CIF Division 4 swimming finals at Belmont Plaza. In one of the races, she finished .19 seconds out of first. The male award winner is Chris “Booie” Grant of Santa Barbara High tennis. She broke a 25-year-old school record in the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 1:02.26 to beat the previous mark of 1:02.51, set by Jo Wallschlaeger in 1985.
