Matthew McPeters was awarded as Special Olympics' Athlete of the Month. McPeters, who went to Santa Barbara High and works at UCSB, sparked a late-inning rally for his softball team with a hit to help them come back from a 4-2 deficit to win the game. Ema Boateng and Annie Weis make this week's set of Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week an all-Cate School affair. Both soccer players, Weis and Boateng led their respective teams to quality results last week. Weis, a senior, scored seven goals and added an assist for good measure in a three-game stretch in which the Rams won 2-of-3 games at the Grace Brethren Tournament. Karen runs Santa Barbara High School's Evening for the Athletes program for three years now, helping raise more than $50,000 for Dons athletics. Brandon Bickett’s performance on the basketball court and Andrea Ward’s effort in the swimming pool earned them Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Week honors. Bickett, a senior at Laguna Blanca, scored 13, 30 and 25 points in wins over Coast Union, Channel Islands and Dunn, respectively. Ward rewrote the UCSB women’s swimming record book in three events at the Texas Hall of Fame Invitational. Santa Barbara girls basketball coach Andrew Butcher was out and about the other day when he spotted his player Ivette Gil in front of a supermarket in Goleta doing some public service work. Bryce Vinion cleans up on the wrestling mat and in mathematics. The Santa Barbara High senior wrestler was honored Monday as the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the school. Vinion carries a 4.7 grade point average, is a National Merit Scholar semifinalist and he is a member of the Math Honors Society. He’s the captain of the wrestling team. Sophomore Christian Pearson stepped up big against bigger blockers and keyed a solid defensive effort by the Bishop Diego football team in its 21-14 win at Twentynine Palms in last Friday’s CIF East Valley Division quarterfinals. As he was watching the USC-UCLA football on TV last Saturday night, Bishop Diego football coach Tom Crawford couldn’t help but notice the young, undersized linebackers of USC and how hard they played. To him, it was like watching his linebacking crew of Christian Pearson, Adrian Solis and Thomas Lash.
