Female Athlete of the Week Hannah McDaniel of the San Marcos track team won the award for the second time in three weeks after winning the high jump, 200 and 400 at the County Championships over the weekend. She also anchored the 4x400 relay team which broke the meet record. SPORTSPERSON OF THE MONTH: This month’s honoree puts together one of the biggest athletic events around. Armando “Mondo” Requejo organizes and directs the Mothballs Criterium — a local cycling race which takes place in February and attracts 400-500 competitors per year. It’s all done through Echelon Santa Barbara, a cycling club founded in 1984 which promotes the sport locally. UCSB's recipient of the award is Katie Voigtlander, who is currently the top 3,000-meter steeplechaser in the Big West Conference. The cross-country and track star is a senior, carrying an impressive 3.86 GPA as a Business Economics major with a minor in Sports Management. On top of the grueling steeplechase, she is ranked ninth in the NCAA West Region in the 5,000-meters and is also an avid downhill ski racer. Male Athlete of the Week Briggs Deardorff has been a star distance runner for Santa Barbara High for a few years now, and he had a big day last week at the Don Green Invitational in Moorpark with wins in the one-mile and two-mile races. Male Athlete of the Week Pepe Gil had 10 RBIs, a pair of doubles and a homer as the Santa Barbara High baseball team went 4-0 last week to claim the title in the Righetti Tournament. The Dons had never made it past the semifinals of the tourney. Gil had a two-run double to score the final two runs of a 7-4 win over Royal in the semifinals. The Dos Pueblos softball sophomore went 3-1 in the pitcher's circle last week. Through the 25 innings, she had 28 strikeouts while only giving up one earned run. Dos Pueblos soccer and track star Erin Ristig is the recipient of the last Phil Womble Ethics Award of the year. Her parents, Dave and Eileen, were at the luncheon to see her honored. Ristig, a junior, carries a GPA over 4.0 and is a leader in both sports she plays even though she is not as vocal as many of her teammates. “I encourage my athletes to learn the definition of integrity and to live it. She then went on to win the 400-meters in 1:00.6 and was also a member of the winning 4x400 relay squad.
