Chris Evans brings home a pair of bronze medals from Fall Games

Chris Evans was presented the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month Award for his play on the tennis court. Evans won bronze medals in singles and double at the recent Special Olympics Fall Games in Orange County. “As a competitor, he rarely comes out of a competition without some hardware,” said tennis coach Liz Frech. “What I appreciate about him is his compassion and kindness to his teammates, most notably to his doubles partner. Andres Santa Maria is standout player on soccer team

Andres Santa Maria was presented the award for his solid play on the soccer field. “He has the ability to move from offense to defense like nobody else on the field. It’s really a pleasure to coach him,” said coach Jerry Segal. Santa Maria is a junior at Santa Barbara High. He recently played for his school at the Special Olympics School Games at Girsh Park. Michael Madrigal’s talent, attitude make him valuable player on softball team

Michael Madrigal was honored for his play on the softball diamond. Coach Jim Callahan said Madrigal has a great attitude. “He has a willingness to do anything for the team and play any position. He has a super attitude.” The coach praised Madrigal’s defense. Two athletes were honored as Special Olympics Athletes of the Month at Monday's Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon. They are John McGrath for track & field and Kyle Simpson for golf. Coach Dan Weiner said McGrath is one of those special athletes that will try anything and has a great attitude. On the track, he does the 100, 200 and anchors the 4x100 relay. Basketball player Susan Carey and track athlete Michelle Oliner were honored as the Special Olympics Athletes of the Month at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon. Carey has been playing basketball for Special Olympics since 1991. Lauren Lee Wingate leads floor hockey team to gold medal

Lauren Lee Wingate received the award after her stellar play and leadership in the floor hockey competition at the Fall Games. The left-winger had two hat tricks over three games and sparked her team to a come-from-behind win for the gold medal. Megan Meyers steps up her game on tennis court

This was a breakout year for tennis player Megan Meyers, said her coach Liz Frech. Meyers stayed focused and won gold and silver medals at the recent Special Olympics Fall Games in Fountain Valley. She took the gold in singles, winning two matches, including one in a tiebreaker. Her silver medal came in doubles. Steven Murray excels on the softball field

Steven Murray, a member of the softball team, was honored as the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month. Murray has competed for Special Olympics of Santa Barbara for the last two years after arriving from Arizona. He spent part of his childhood in Goleta and played softball with his friends, said coach Kayla Edwards. Ryan Childress ‘a Rock Star’ on Soccer Field

Ryan Childress made an immediate impact with the soccer team. Bocce ball player David Schottler was honored as the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon. Schottler competed at last summer’s Special Olympics Summer Games and plays in the Monday Bocce League at Arnoldi’s Restaurant.
