PHIL WOMBLE ETHICS AWARD, ANNIE THWING Annie Thwing is a standout on the San Marcos cross country and track teams for more than just her athletic prowess. Spencer Mikles, Santa Barbara High Mikles was a member of the Dons' golf squad which won a State Championship last season and is also a starting guard on the basketball team. He carries a 4.3 GPA and is taking three AP classes. His golf coach, James Bedard, used an anecdote about Mikles and the award's namesake to illustrate his character. PHIL WOMBLE ETHICS AWARD Josh Bartley, Dos Pueblos — The award's namesake was on hand to see it given to Bartley, a junior running back and track star at Dos Pueblos. Dos Pueblos soccer and track star Erin Ristig is the recipient of the last Phil Womble Ethics Award of the year. Her parents, Dave and Eileen, were at the luncheon to see her honored. Ristig, a junior, carries a GPA over 4.0 and is a leader in both sports she plays even though she is not as vocal as many of her teammates. “I encourage my athletes to learn the definition of integrity and to live it. Lauren McAlister’s junior season with the Laguna Blanca girls soccer team ended in the quarterfinals over the weekend, but luckily for the Owls she’ll be back to lead next year. Cate junior Jackson Mauze is an all-county and all-CIF third baseman as well as a standout on the Rams' 8-man football team and soccer squad. He is on pace to earn 12 varsity letters in his Cate career. He holds a 3.5 GPA and, most importantly, serves as a role model and mentor for younger students. Cody Yokubaitis is a standout pitcher in baseball, just like his UCSB Hall-of-Fame father Dan. But when the Bishop Diego junior was approached to play soccer by coach Jesus Landeros, the response went something like this: "Coach, you know that soccer is not my sport. Phil Womble Ethics Award winner Shelby Dunlap does it all at Carpinteria High. She plays volleyball, basketball, track and is also a varsity cheerleader.
