A member of the legendary “Running Royals” team that advanced to the CIF-4A Championship game, Azain was a second-team All-CIF selection (1980- 81) and a two-time All-Channel League member (1979-80, 1980-81). Helping the Royals to a 50-2 record over two seasons (1979-81), Azain averaged 15.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in his senior year.

After a one-year stint at Cal State Northridge (1982-83), Azain returned to Santa Barbara to star as a three-year letterman for Westmont College (1983-86) and played on two Warrior teams that advanced to the NAIA national tournament, including the Final Four team of 1984. The 1985-86 Defensive Player of the Year, Azain averaged 10.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game as a senior. Azain is second in Westmont career field goal percentage (.611) and first in single-season field goal percentage (.676 in 1985-86). Sixth in single-season steals (68 in 1985-86) and eight in single-season steals per game (2.2 in 1985-86), Azain also served as the Team Captain and was honored as the Tom Byron Most Inspirational Player in 1985-86, his senior season. Azain wrapped up his 18th season as an Assistant Coach for Westmont Mens’ Basketball. He also serves as Associate Director of Warrior Sports Associates, coordinating fundraising activities such as the Westmont Golf Classic and Golf Marathon.
