SBCC baseball coach sends out a warning to regional playoff foe

SBCC baseball coach Jeff Walker noted at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon that Cypress College asked about possibly hosting the Southern California Regional playoff series with the Vaqueros despite being the lower seeded team. “Cypress wants nothing to do with our field,” Walker said. “They tried to get the home field even though we’re the higher seed, so that’s a win of us. We’re excited with that.” SBCC (23-16), champions of the Western State Conference North … [Read more...]

SBCC baseball had tough time dealing with El Niño

The recent warm weather has been welcomed by SBCC baseball coach Jeff Walker. After a slow start, the Vaqueros have won 11 of their last 13 games and eight in row. “The main reason is because our biggest opponent at the beginning of the year was El Niño, which was actually ranked No. 1 in our preseason poll,” Walker cracked at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe. The Vaqueros won the game 6-1 to improve to 14-7 in the Western State Conference North Division and 17-16 overall. "That probably explains why we won Saturday … [Read more...]

In all his years in baseball, Westmont coach Robert Ruiz said he’d never seen a no-hitter until Friday when his pitcher Daniel Butler threw one in a 6-0 victory over visiting Arizona Christian. “It was the first no-hitter I’ve ever been at a field for, either against us or us against someone else, or even as a spectator,” he said at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Café.  “I had never seen one. It was pretty awesome.” While he’d never witnessed … [Read more...]

CIF playoff basketball teams in traffic jam sessions on the road

The road is rough in the CIF playoffs, with traffic being the most stressful part for traveling teams. The San Marcos and Santa Barbara boys basketball teams experienced the "jam session" of freeway gridlock traveling to their second-round games last Friday. San Marcos played at Gahr in Cerritos in a 3AA Division game while Santa Barbara took the long road to Colton to play Grand Terrace in the 2A Division. “We got there 15 minutes before game time because of traffic,” San Marcos coach … [Read more...]
