John McGrath does it all in track; Kyle Simpson honored for golf

Two athletes were honored as Special Olympics Athletes of the Month at Monday's Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon. They are John McGrath for track & field and Kyle Simpson for golf. Coach Dan Weiner said McGrath is one of those special athletes that will try anything and has a great attitude. On the track, he does the 100, 200 and anchors the 4x100 relay. Susan Carey is a basketball standout; Michelle Oliner tears it up in track

Basketball player Susan Carey and track athlete Michelle Oliner were honored as the Special Olympics Athletes of the Month at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon. Carey has been playing basketball for Special Olympics since 1991. Bocce ball player David Schottler was honored as the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon. Schottler competed at last summer’s Special Olympics Summer Games and plays in the Monday Bocce League at Arnoldi’s Restaurant. Jose Castrejon was honored as the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon. Castrejon has competed in Special Olympics for nine years. Ben Watts and Elise Maurer have made great strides in their sports with Special Olympics of Santa Barbara. Watts is a standout player in floor hockey and Maurer excels in track and field and soccer. Kyle Petersilia and Steve Krauskopf were honored Monday as the Special Olympics Athletes of Month for the last two months. Petersilia, who celebrated his 34th birthday on Sunday, has been participating in Special Olympics sports for 15 straight years. He was honored for his play on the softball field.
